Now checking Meshmixer I see it will not export a STEP file so I am still at a bit of a loss as how I get this new dimensioned solid model (if it is solid) into Solidworks, the only options seem to be. I have just used the Make solid tool – help text for that said “tool help text” so I have no idea what that does really/what I have done to the model by using it, apart from hopefully the obvious. I have not looked at Meshlab yet maybe that is better. I really cannot get motivated to learn software when it has no documentation. tool help for the Measure/Dimension tool is “Measure dimensions in the scene”. I have had a little play with Meshmixer for creating supports but have not gone any further as I find the interface difficult and the help (that I have looked at) is non-existent – e.g. I understand 2D drafting and 3D solid modelling but I really do not understand anything about these mesh formats and the software that manipulates them. My research so far leads me to think that Meshmixer or Meshlab may be my saviour. Now this may be OK for a figurine but it is no good for engineering work or, in this case, medical work. You need to do things manually by doing it visually. You cannot detect any edges or planes and so cannot get at any dimensions. Solidworks will import the STL file but in reality you cannot do anything with it. The difficulty is that Solidworks (and most other modellers I am guessing) does what it says on the tin – it works with solids not with mesh files. But before printing I need to get the file/data into Solidworks so I can modify the design of the scanned part. I am assuming that this will come in the guise of an STL file. This algorithm will add more detail to the mesh.I have a project where my input will be scanned data. This time distribute points by going to Filter > Re-meshing-simplification and reconstruction > Use sub-division algorithm called LS3 loop. Now approximate more normals using the point cloud to add more detail. Turn on the Light found within the tool bar and also turn on Smoothing which is next to the light button. Make the numbers bigger if the point cloud is big. Now go to Filters > Point Set > Surface Reconstruction: Poisson, set parameters, 12 for Octree Depth and 7 for Solver Divide, these numbers can be changed depending on the scale of the original point cloud mesh. This will create an even sampling distribution of the cloud points, and will give a general surface to work with. Now create a subset of the point cloud, go to Filters > Sampling > Poisson -Disk sampling, change the Number of Samples to 5000 and check the box for Base Mesh Subsampling. Turn on layers from the top menu bar View -> Open Layer Dialog. Change the camera to -1000 so that the sampling program knows that the cloud point data was taken from a large distance, this would give it a better idea where the normals should go. Recompute normals using Filter > Point Set -> Compute normals for point sets, change number to 16 for the number of neighbors and also check the box for Flip Normals.
